In Prevention, Flooding, Restoration

No one wants to come home from work to find water damage in their home. Not only is it difficult to clean up, but restoration can be costly. According to Water Damage Defense, 14,000 people in the U.S. experience a water damage emergency at home or work each day. That translates to close to 98 percent of basements in the U.S. will experience some water damage during their life spans. You do not want your home to be apart of that 98 percent. There are different ways to try and prevent water from damaging your home. Here are Spotless Carpet Cleaner’s three main tips.

Clean

Not all water damage occurs from a leak within the home. Often there are external factors that contribute to the mess. The main culprits include gutters, foundation, soil, and downspouts. The purpose of gutters and downspouts is to protect your home from rainwater, which ultimately could find its way to the foundation. If your foundation becomes consistently wet, it can begin to give way. This opens up a possibility for water from entering your home, thus creating water damage over time. Also, soil can have a similar effect and damage your foundation. One simple fix to avoid this snowball effect is regularly clean your gutters. If your gutters are not clogged, they will do their job correctly. This could prevent any foundation, downspout, or soil issues from arising.

Test

If your home has a sump pump, it is essential to test it frequently. A sump pump is a device that resides in the lowest part of a basement or crawlspace. The purpose of a sump pump is to help keep under the building dry. This ultimately helps prevent flooding. Testing your pump will provide you peace in knowing it works appropriately. You do not want to realize it wasn’t working after your basement floods. Even if your basement does not flood, sump pumps help with mold and bacteria growing in hidden damp spots. Make sure you know how to test it and do so often.

Fix

One major way to avoid water damage is to fix anything that is broken. This ranges from gutters to sump pumps, even to broken appliances. A broken pipe, leaky washing machine, and also toilets will cause water damage. Check out our blog on how to spot water damage here. Once you spot it, try to fix it immediately.
