You love your carpet. You love your dog and cat. But your pets like to leave their odors on your lovely carpet. There are a few things you can do to keep your carpet smelling clean, and you don’t have to get rid of your pets!
Vacuum Thoroughly
By thoroughly, we mean that you need to get in all the corners, under all the furniture, and inside all the crevices of your couch and chairs. Pet hair gets compacted down into thick carpets, so make sure you’re using a good vacuum cleaner with plenty of power and a HEPA filter to catch all the odor-causing dust and allergens. To really get the full odor-eliminating effect of a vacuum routine, try the old baking soda trick (details to follow).
The Baking Soda Trick
Baking soda is inexpensive, yet effective. Sprinkle it over your carpet. Use a brush tool to get it deep into the carpet. Let it sit all day or overnight (this gives the baking soda time to absorb the pet odors), and then vacuum it up. This is a great carpet freshener, plus it is safe for your pets.
Pinpoint the Problem Area
It’s not always obvious where the smell is coming from. Search thoroughly for urine spots. If you can’t find it, try using a black light when it is naturally dark in the room. This should help you see urine spots that were invisible to you before. Once you have found it, you can spot clean using your favorite carpet cleaner or a homemade vinegar spray.
Homemade Vinegar Spray
Combine equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray over the problem spot, and let it settle. Blot with paper towels. Allow it to dry, and then follow up with a baking soda treatment and a vacuum. Vinegar is a natural odor-eliminator, plus it is safe for your dogs and cats.
