Water damage doesn’t have to be unpredictable. Yes, sometimes it is completely out of your hands, but that isn’t always the case. By choosing to be proactive about water damage, you can lower the chances of it occurring in your home! Here are a few ways to prevent water damage from occurring.

A great way to be proactive about water damage is by conducting yearly inspections. These can be done on your own or with the help of a certified inspector. Look for places water damage could occur. There are many areas in your home that could be a hidden cause of damage. This includes windows, appliances, gutters, and the roof.  Make sure to inspect and clean your gutters in the fall when leaves are falling off trees! This is also a great time to inspect the outside of your home before the weather changes too.

In addition to yearly or frequent inspections, there are certain precautions you can take to avoid water damage! In the winter months, the temperatures frequently drop. When this happens, the chances of your pipes freezing goes up. A burst pipe is one of the last things you want because it can cause great damage to your home. You can lower your chances of a burst pipe by opening any cabinet doors or attic access doors. This keeps warm air circulating in these areas, which helps prevent freezing.

In addition, you can let water drip as well. You don’t want to keep your sink running like you would when you do the dishes, but rather a small drip. This keeps water slowly flowing through the pipes, which in turn will prevent bursting. If you notice any openings around doors or windows, make sure to seal those immediately. A proper seal can prevent unwanted water from entering and damaging your home.
