In Water Damage

Bristol, Kingsport, and Johnson City, TN

Most homes experience major water damage at least once during their existence, but water damage actually can impact your property in a wide variety of ways.

Just look at some of these statistics.

The average home loses 14 percent of the water delivered to it, because of leakage. That adds up to as many as 22 gallons lost daily because of dripping faucets or malfunctioning toilets. A 1/8-inch crack in a pipe can cause the loss of up to 250 gallons of water each day. Some toilet leaks may lead to an additional annual cost of $500 on your utilities.

Improvements in water quality can have a negative impact on your pipes. This is especially true for copper pipes, which will corrode and fail at a faster rate. As many as 90 percent of copper pinhole leaks occur on horizontal sections of pipe.

Property damage from water is the third-largest cause of homeowner loss. Between 2007 and 2009, it led to more than $9 billion in total loss and represents approximately 23 percent of all reported property loss during that span. Data from the American Insurance Association shows that water damage is the second-most frequently filed claim by U.S. Homeowners. Sadly, research shows that up to 93 percent of these water damage issues could have been prevented with the installation of a detection and shut-off system in the affected buildings.

Water damage has fueled the increase in homeowner insurance rates during the past few decades. In the 1970s, the average bill for water damage to a home was about $600. Today, if your home sustains major water damage, you can expect to pay $5,000, if not more.

About 40 percent of homeowners have reported a loss due to water damage. For those with a basement, that figure jumps to 98 percent.
